10 Ways Food Impacts History, Life, and the World in the Bible

10 Ways Food Impacts History, Life, and the World in the BibleFood is the very substance that God chose to nourish the human race — and food plays a very important part in life, the world, and history. It is in the very first chapter of the Bible that God creates food — even before He creates man. And the Bible closes its final chapter in Revelation with the tree of life which bears twelve kinds of fruit with leaves that heal the nations. Also in this last chapter we see the water of life offered to all who are thirsty. Continue reading “10 Ways Food Impacts History, Life, and the World in the Bible”

October Weight Loss Journal

October Weight Loss Journal: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

This month has been the first month that I have not finished lower than I started. On October 1st, I weighed in at 149 and on October 31st, I weighed in at 149.8. There were some 147’s in the mix as well as one 152.

But I am not discouraged, nor have I stopped trying to take off the last five pounds of my weight. So today I am going to share the good, the bad, and the ugly about this month in weight loss.

Food: A Stumbling Block to Believers and Non-believers

Metaphor_ Breath-24Around the World in 80 Days.

What does the 1956 version of Jules Verne’s classic Around the World in 80 Days have to do with food and stumbling blocks?

When Victorian-era Englishman Phileas Fogg undertakes a wager to travel around the globe in 80 days in a hot air balloon, he takes in tow his faithful (but new) French manservant Passepartout (pass-par-TOO) as his traveling companion. Passepartout’s couriosity and love for adventure (and women) gets him into all kinds of interesting predicaments, including getting shanghaied in China, roped into a bull fight in Spain, and enlisted as an acrobat in a Japanese circus.

Holy Cow.

But when attention seeking Passpartout attempts to save a damsel from a flower hungry bull in India, things don’t go as expected. Continue reading “Food: A Stumbling Block to Believers and Non-believers”

A Dozen Beautiful Reasons Organic Pastured Eggs are Superior

A Dozen Beautiful Reasons Organic Pastured Eggs are Superior

Organic pastured eggs are one of God’s powerhouse foods. They are loaded with vitamins, minerals, protein, healthy fat, amino acids, and other necessary life-giving nutrition. I recently wrote about Pete and Gerry’s Eggs — which I still recommend. They are a good quality egg for a reasonable price (between $3.99-$5.50 a dozen). But the best eggs are organic pastured eggs. And they are now available at local supermarkets.

Handsome Brook Farm delivers organic pastured eggs, and I have made the switch — even though Handsome Brook is the more expensive option at around $6.99 a dozen.

The main reason I made the switch was because the yolks are firmer and are more consistently bright orange — which is what to expect with organic pastured eggs.  Continue reading “A Dozen Beautiful Reasons Organic Pastured Eggs are Superior”

Trader Joe's Dark Chocolate Honey Mints

Honey Mints.

It is rare that I share a product that is not organic. But Trader Joe’s Dark Chocolate Honey Mints get high marks on my health meter.

I recently visited a health food store that was giving away some candy. The cashier said the mints were not very good. I asked her why she didn’t like them. Her reason was because they were made of honey.

I love honey — in fact it is a God approved sweetener. So I gave the treat a try. It was delicious, reminding me of a Peppermint Patty. Unfortunately, I did not learn the brand of the candy, nor was the store going carry them. But when I learned that Trader Joe’s was carrying Dark Chocolate Honey Mints with “Just Three Ingredients,” I had to give them a try — even though they were not organic.

One bite reminded me of Continue reading “Dark Chocolate Honey Mints from Trader Joe’s (Just 3 Ingredients)”

Food Fosters Fellowship

Food Fosters Fellowship and Community

Food Fosters FellowshipThis is part nine of the series 10 Ways Food Impacts History, Life, and the World in the Bible.

Pot Providence.

Christians don’t believe in luck, but rather in God’s providence. Yet many churches have employed the term “luck” in their common meal. That meal of course is the “pot luck” dinner.

To be consistent (and somewhat playful), my husband and I have renamed the “pot luck” to a “pot providence” because God ordains everything that comes to pass. Some churches prefer to call it a “fellowship meal” — which is an even better name.

But whatever you call it, church members love to spread out a buffet of carefully prepared dishes from savory to sweet to enjoy together as a family of believers. And while those meals are being enjoyed, people grow closer to one another through conversation, laughter, and fellowship.

But food and fellowship is not reserved for Sundays.

Food and Family.

In daily life, it is well known that sitting around the table at mealtime fosters a strong and cohesive family with children who are confident of the love of their parents.

And can you imagine a family reunion or holiday that did not involve food? When planning for such events, food is one of the first considerations.

The big questions at Christmas might be Continue reading “Food Fosters Fellowship and Community”

The Top Two Reasons You Want to Lose Weight (Survey Results)

Thank You Card

Thank You!

I recently shared a request for feedback concerning my upcoming weight loss and diet book. You can read the post here: Will You Please Help Me Out With A Short Survey?

I am so grateful and amazed by all the thoughtful responses I received. It has helped me out so much. I know now that I must add several chapters to address all the information that is important to my readers. If you have not had a chance to share what is important to you, the survey is still open. I welcome as many responses as possible. Take Survey Now!

The one thing that surprised me the most (though I don’t know why) was the number one reason my readers (and those who responded) want to lose weight.

I was sure the top motivator for weight loss was to feel more attractive. I couldn’t have been more wrong (though it did rank #3).

I was also surprised by the number two reason you all are motivated to lose weight.

Weight Loss Motivators.

There were 7 possible answers for the question: “What are your primary motivators to lose weight (check all that apply)?” Here is how YOU ranked them.  Continue reading “The Top Two Reasons You Want to Lose Weight (Survey Results)”

Curry Cauliflower Soup with Turmeric and Bone Broth: Anti-Inflammatory Recipe

Curry Cauliflower Soup with Turmeric and Bone BrothSoup Season Is Here.

It’s that wonderful time of the year when I can start enjoying fragrant, flavorful soups. Curry is one of my favorite spices. And cauliflower is one of my favorite vegetables. Combine them together and I just can’t seem to get enough.

I’ve made this Curry Cauliflower Soup with Turmeric twice this autumn already — and my husband keeps asking for more.

Turmeric.

Recently, I’ve been adding turmeric to my diet due to its amazing anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties. In addition, there is turmeric in curry powder too — so this recipe is a medicinal powerhouse. And this does not account for the Bone Broth — which is rich in collagen. Read about some of the benefits of Bone Broth collagen here. This soup contains only healthy, life-giving ingredients — with tons of flavor.  Continue reading “Curry Cauliflower Soup with Turmeric and Bone Broth: Anti-Inflammatory Recipe”

Food That Brings Judgment from the God

The Food that Brings Judgment from the Almighty

Food That Brings Judgment from the GodCareless Communion.

The most interesting communion ceremony I observed was while working as a house parent for teenage girls. The job allowed many opportunities to visit various churches desiring to minister to the less fortunate girls in our care.

During Communion, one non-denomination church passed out prepackaged grape juice cups similar to single serving coffee creamers with pull off paper lids. But inside the lid was a small wafer of bread. It was like fast food communion.

How the elements were dispensed was not a problem for me. But as I listened to the pastor invite the congregation to partake, I realized that the church had Continue reading “The Food that Brings Judgment from the Almighty”
