14 Reasons God Approves Wine in the Bible

14 Reasons God Approves Wine in the BibleOur last post, The Joy of the Vine Is in the Wine,  demonstrated 7 reasons that wine in the Bible contained alcohol. And if the post did not convince you, read Kenneth Gentry’s book, God Gave Wine: What the Bible Says About Alcohol.

We have been defending the fact that God gave His seal of approval for certain foods and drinks that are controversial in today’s society. Presently we are discussing wine in the Bible. Today will explore the fact that God not only approves of wine, but in certain circumstances He even commands its use.

As Christians we have an obligation to “obey all that He commanded us” and to teach others to do the same. “Obeying” all that God commands includes abstaining from certain behaviors. Beyond this we have “Christian liberty” or freedom. God’s law is so simple, but man loves to add to it.

No where is there a command to not drink wine in the Bible. Yet the command to drink wine in certain circumstances is evident — as you will see below. When God does not “forbid” something in the Scripture, neither can we forbid it. To do so is an act of Pharisee-ism and legalism, an adding to the law of God. But as we will see, God not only does not forbid wine, He is pleased with it. Wine is a gift from God to be enjoyed on His terms, just like sexual intimacy and food are to be enjoyed on His terms. Our last post shared 7 reasons that wine in the Bible contained alcohol. And today we will double the evidence that God approves wine in the Bible.

Below are 14 reasons that Christians are allowed (or even commanded) to drink wine in the Bible. Continue reading “14 Reasons God Approves Wine in the Bible”

Food That Brings Judgment from the God

The Food that Brings Judgment from the Almighty

Food That Brings Judgment from the GodCareless Communion.

The most interesting communion ceremony I observed was while working as a house parent for teenage girls. The job allowed many opportunities to visit various churches desiring to minister to the less fortunate girls in our care.

During Communion, one non-denomination church passed out prepackaged grape juice cups similar to single serving coffee creamers with pull off paper lids. But inside the lid was a small wafer of bread. It was like fast food communion.

How the elements were dispensed was not a problem for me. But as I listened to the pastor invite the congregation to partake, I realized that the church had Continue reading “The Food that Brings Judgment from the Almighty”

Food A Sign and Seal of the New Covenant

Food: A Sign and Seal of the Covenant

Metaphor_ Breath-20

This is part seven of a 10 part series titled 10 Ways Food Impacts History, Life, and the World.

Common for Holy.

Have you ever wondered why God would choose common elements like bread and wine to represent something holy like a sacrament? According to the Westminster Confession of Faith, “sacraments are holy signs and seals of the covenant of grace” instituted by God as revealed in the Scriptures.

Sacraments.

The Christian church has two biblical sacraments, baptism and communion.

Baptism is the sign and seal that we are washed from our sins and united to Christ into the covenant of grace. The sign is performed with water (washing) and represents the true baptism which is by the Spirit of God.

Communion, or the Lord’s Supper, is the sign and seal of the New Covenant in Christ’s blood, a symbol of the death of Christ for our sins.

The first element of Communion is a regular reminder of the body of Christ (His death for our sins) and is represented with a piece of common food, namely bread. And the blood He shed is represented by a common drink, namely wine.

Why would God chose common food and drink as the medium for something sacred? Continue reading “Food: A Sign and Seal of the Covenant”

Why Am I Sick? Reason #3: Judgment Against Sin

Would God Really Use Sickness as Judgment?

Some people are sick or suffer because of God’s judgment against their sin. This can be an indirect judgment in the form of general discipline, or a direct judgment for a specific sin. First let’s discuss the issue of discipline.

Church Discipline

God has ordained an order of discipline within the church in order to bring repentance to men or women who have fallen into sin. The purpose for this judgment is Continue reading “Why Am I Sick? Reason #3: Judgment Against Sin”
