The ABC’s of Emotional Well Being

ABC's of Emotional Well Being

Thoughts Affect Your Emotional Well Being

Did you know that every thought you have sends electrical signals throughout your brain?  Thoughts have actual physical properties that control your emotional well being.  Thoughts are real!  They have significant influence on every cell in your body.  When your mind is burdened with many negative thoughts, it affects your deep limbic system and causes deep limbic problems (irritability, moodiness, depression, etc.)  Teaching yourself to control and direct thoughts in a positive way is one of the most effective ways to feel better. [1]

God Knows About Your Emotional Well Being

The Apostle Paul was well aware of the connection between thoughts and feelings. He continually admonished believers to rejoice, give thanks, live in peace, and think good thoughts. Paul didn’t get his information from science, but from God, who knows everything. God is keenly aware of the how thoughts affect our emotional well being because He is our creator. And He wants us to live a life full of peace. That is why He used Paul to tell us exactly how we can achieve it. Philippians 4:4-9 (NAS) says:

Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice! Let your gentle spirit be known to all men. The Lord is near. Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brethren,

–  whatever is true

–  whatever is lovely,

–  whatever is of good repute,

– if there is any excellence and

–  if anything worthy of praise

dwell on these things. The things you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you [emphasis mine].

The Thought/Feeling Connection Is Real

There is an obvious connection between what we think and how we feel. The Bible declares it, science affirms it, and I have experienced it – and so can you.  In this post I share how I overcame a deep period of depression using the biblical principle shared above. Even now I use this scriptural principle to to put my thoughts in the right place so I can daily experience emotional well being. If you are feeling depressed, or your mind is dwelling on the wrong things, consider focusing on something positive, truthful, thankful, and worthy of praise.

Try this; it has never failed me:

Count…no…alphabetize your blessings.

Yes, the blessings are there. Do you have hands? Can you walk? Can you read? Sing? Smell? Eat? Breathe? There are more blessings in the average American’s life than you could name going through the alphabet 1000 times – but you must discipline yourself to do it. Let me show you an easy way.

After you read this blog, share a couple of your blessings with the rest of us in the comment section.

  • A – Apples – I love apples. Thank you, Lord, for apples (especially with peanut butter).
  • B – Bountiful grace – hey look at that, I am even using adjectives.
  • C – Charys, my step-daughter. Thank you, Lord, that she is alive. Please watch over her.
  • D – Dental health. Thank you, Lord, I have no fillings.
  • E – Emily. Thank you, Lord, that my daughter is able to attend Patrick Henry College.
  • F – Food. Thank you, Lord, I have never gone hungry.
  • G – Gift of your Spirit. Thank you, Lord, that Your Spirit dwells in me.
  • H – Health. You have answered my prayers for healing on numerous occasions.
  • I – Image. What a joy to be created in Your image.
  • J – Jesus. Thank You God for sending Your Son to forgive my sins.

Okay, you get the idea. When you are down — do your ABCs.

Now could you do me a favor?

Share this post on Facebook or Pinterest (and there’s an F and a P to add to my list). Thanks!
