April Weight Loss Journal with Commentary (down 19 pounds total)

I am being consistent with my caloric intake, and I have been walking about 45 minutes a day. The only downer: I did break my diet today. I ate something that I didn’t really like. It was a new recipe I was trying out, and it was a flop. My whole goal is to eat the foods I love. But since I had already prepared the meal, I went ahead and ate it. Adding some salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes helped enormously.

I am planning a trip to visit family for a week and a half. That has me a little concerned. I am not sure if I will be able to be faithful to my weight loss goals. Also, I am afraid the scale will weigh differently — so I will not get accurate measures. Something to look forward to.

April 6th: Today was a big disappointment. I stepped on the scale and it said 166. I was thrilled. However, lately my scale had been acting up, giving me false readings. So I stepped on it again: 167. After another 10 or so attempts at weighing myself, I realized that I must need to change my batteries. The scale was registering anywhere between 161 (I wish) and 170 (no way). I was very frustrated and disappointed. After changing the batteries, I got a reading that I finally trusted (even though it was higher than I was hoping for): 166.8 (though I accidentally posted 168.8 on Twitter @mischelle007).

April 8th: After dealing with the scale adjustment, I wasn’t really sure if I could rely on any “truthful” weight. I was again discouraged. 167.4. How could I go “up” after breaking through? I was encouraged when later in the day the scale weighed in at 165 something. That was a first for me (a new low). But I couldn’t record it because it was not at my usual time. I am looking forward to the morning. Hope I am not disappointed. Tomorrow is my anniversary so I will have to be extra vigilant.

April 9th: I weighed in at a new low, blowing right through the 165 mark to 164.8. But we were headed to Biltmore Estates, and I knew there were going to be some temptations throughout the day. I started off the day with an eclair followed by a pizza lunch and a root beer float for dessert. I had a few other goodies too including chocolates at the confectioner’s shop. The only regret was that I ate some of the foods even though I did not enjoy them fully. But it was our anniversary and I didn’t want to be a wet blanket.

April 10th: I was not surprised that the scale jumped up, and we had a lunch date after church with some friends. And I was craving some cake (which I really had wanted at the Biltmore but opted against). So we headed to Outback for a piece of carrot cake. Yes, I enjoyed our anniversary weekend.

April 11th: 167 did not surprise me after all the unusual food over the weekend. Today I will get back into the swing of things. The thing that disappointed me the most about my anniversary “fling” — was that I really didn’t enjoy the foods that I ate. I’d much rather eat the foods which are on my diet than eat out and eat the foods that are not. With the foods on my diet it is a win win. I love what I eat and I lose weight. The other foods I don’t love that much and I gain weight. I need to find a solution so I can have the best of both worlds while I am away from home.

April 20-30th: I left for my parents house in California on the 20th of April. I was somewhat apprehensive because every other trip I had gained 5-10 pounds. I didn’t want that to happen this time. The scale I was weighing on was not digital, so it was hard to record a precise weight as I had been doing. In addition, I kept up on my weigh-in’s on Twitter for the first couple of days, but found it too difficult to keep up because I didn’t have a good computer. I found that the lack of accountability was not good. Also, I made an amazingly delicious Hummingbird Cake to give my California friends and family a taste of the south. Thankfully my mother encouraged me to make only a half a batch of frosting. The cake was delicious and tempting. The first two days I only had a small piece each day. But on the third day I had three pieces (lack of accountability). It did affect the scale, but I tried to counter it in other ways. Overall, I gained only a bit of weight — but I could have lost if I hadn’t made that wonderful cake. No regrets. Enjoying the journey is part of the prize. I also hit a new low on the vacation: 163.0 — more of that to come.
