While pastured, organic eggs are the very best on the market, the cost is often prohibitive and the availability scarce. Many people buy farm fresh eggs (that may or may not be pastured) thinking they are the best eggs on the market. Unfortunately that is not usually the case. Almost all farmers supplement their laying hens with chicken feed. Two primary ingredients in chicken feed are corn and soy, and it is estimated that 90% of the corn and soy sold in America is Round-up Ready (which means it is a GMO — Genetically Modified Organism).
In simpler language: if you are buying farm fresh eggs — they are contaminated with glyphosate. How can I make this claim? Experience. Ask your local farmer what they feed (or use to supplement the diets of) their laying hens. If they say, “Well I buy my grain from Farmer so and so,” go visit farmer so and so. Find out how he is raising his crops. If they are not organic, there is a 90% chance that they are producing Round-up Ready GMO feed. And, unfortunately, the glyphosate will end up in your eggs, which will end up in your body. By the way — this applies to all conventional, non-organic eggs as well.
So what is a person to do?
I have found an inexpensive solution: Pete And Gerry’s Organic Eggs. They are under $5.00 a dozen at our local Earthfare and about $5.50 at our local Ingles. Not all organic eggs are laid equal — Pete And Gerry’s are the cream of the crop. While they are not purely “pastured,” they are about as close as you get for a great price.
