Sometimes I just crave chocolate cake. And no cake is worth its flour if it doesn’t have a decadent (fairly healthy) frosting. These two frosting recipes are over the top (and out of the world) delicious. While I can’t recommend that you make these once a week, or even once a month — when you need a frosting — you need to be able to make it with decent ingredients (no lard or crisco or hydrogenated vegetable oil).
The chocolate buttercream frosting recipe could be made with coconut oil (and coconut milk) if you wanted a vegan variety, but it gets too hard in the refrigerator and too soft at room temperature. A compromise would be to store the cake in the fridge, but let it sit on the counter an hour or so before serving. But, I prefer butter in this recipe.
The chocolate whipped frosting is very versatile. It can be used as a whipped frosting, a cake filling, or as a self-contained chocolate mousse dessert.
If you are looking for something interesting to frost: try my chocolate quinoa cupcake recipe. I’ll be putting up a chocolate beet cake recipe (that my daughter perfected) in a couple of weeks.

$5.83 is a small price to pay for a healthier (and delicious) chocolate buttercream frosting.

Whipped Chocolate Frosting
Ingredients (organic) | Cost | Calories |
Whipping Cream (Trader Joe’s) | $3.99 | 1600 |
Powdered Sugar (Trader Joe’s) | $1.00 | 480 |
Cocoa Powder (Amazon) | $0.58 | 120 |
————- | ——– | ——— |
Total | $5.57 | 2200 |

Yield: fill two cakes (per cake) | $2.79 | 1100 |
Yield: 4 servings chocolate mousse (per serving) | $1.39 | 550 |
This recipe is slightly lower in calories and cost. But it is pretty close. The sugar content on this recipe is much lower, however. Both are equally decadent and a great price for an organic (semi) healthy frosting.
Ingredients (organic):
- 1 pint Whipping Cream
- 1 cup Powder Sugar, sifted
- 6 tbsp. Cocoa Powder, sifted
Directions:
- Whisk together ingredients until well blended
- Whip ingredients together in stand mixer (or with hand mixer) until desired consistency (see next step)
- Whip until it has a strong set — but before it turns to butter
- For cake: frost one cake
- For filling: fill two cakes
- For mousse: serve four – 1 cup servings
