As I write this post, I have no idea who is going to win the 2016 presidential election between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. Yet, the results will likely already be revealed either before or shortly after this is posted.
I have never been more conflicted in a presidential election. I am not locked into a two party system. This means I don’t vote for the lessor of two evils. I vote for the candidate who upholds my values and beliefs as close as possible. This year it was Tom Hoefling.
Unfortunately, I could not write him in my South Carolina ballot because it was not allowed. So, indeed, my vote was wasted — because I could not cast it for the person I desired even though he appeared on ballots across the U.S. and was a viable “write-in” in others.
I have been struggling with this for some time, even considering going against my convictions to vote for another candidate that was the nemesis to another.
But in all my considering, I finally came to resolve when I realized that a vote for Donald Trump was not really a vote for the lessor evil. A vote for Trump was a vote for the lessor of two judgments.
If Hillary wins the election, a great judgment will fall upon America — and many Americans are chomping at the bit to receive it.
If Trump wins the election, a lessor judgment will fall up America — and many (Christian) Americans are chomping at the bit to receive it.
I voted for no judgment. But my voice was so small that no-one heard it or cared.
The two party system is broken. My hope is for change — in the system. But it will never happen until we are ready to vote for righteousness over judgment.
Will that day happen in America? I don’t know. But if it doesn’t, we can only expect more and more judgment until we are only a by-word.
Thankfully, I can rest and trust that God ordains all that comes to pass. He is the one who rises up kings for his purposes in history — and no one can thwart His plans.
If God judges us big time with Hillary — I will rejoice and rest in His sovereignty. Rejoice because I trust God, and rest because I trust God.
If He chooses the lessor of two judgments, I will also rejoice (perhaps more) and yet I will still rest in His sovereignty. Rejoice more because He chose the lessor of two judgments, and rest because I still can trust God.
Of course my prayer is that the church in America will choose godly rulers to rule over them with righteousness, justice, and equity. May the Lord grant my petition in Jesus’ name.
