I will never stop the mantra: food, not supplements, is the best way to get nutrition. After all — food has been God’s design to make healthy humans from the beginning of time. Why fix something that is not broken?
Unfortunately, the world is broken due to the fall of mankind and the subsequent curse. Weeds do grow and pests do devour crops. And, man has tried to circumvent the curse by creating and using pesticides and herbicides instead of the God ordained “sweat of the brow.” Pulling weeds is much harder than spraying herbicides. And rotating crops and allowing the soils to replenish takes more work than using pesticides. (Healthy soil produces healthy plants).
And the health of the people suffer the consequences.
Ideally, the solution is to return to organic farming. I say “return” to organic farming because herbicides and pesticides are a fairly modern invention. Our forefathers would have known nothing of the sort, only producing crops by the sweat of the brow. And without all the government red tape to be allowed to say so!
So what can be done? Here are some answers.
- Make food your primary source of nutrition. How? Eat lots of raw organic fruits and vegetables. Eat cooked fruits and vegetables that are grown the organic method. Sprout your (organic) grains prior to consumption. Stick with 100% grass-fed beef, wild caught fish (from clean waters), pastured (organic) chicken, organically produced raw milk from grass-fed cows, honey for sweetener, and other such foods that have been designed to provide nourishment for the human body.
- Get back to safe farming practices that naturally replenish the soil and nourish the crops.
- And if you must supplement, use only (or at least primarily) whole food supplements.
Be sure to check the labels of your supplements as well as your food. Just because a product is labelled whole food or natural does not mean that it is good for you. I have seen terrible ingredients like sodium benzoate, a carcinogen (cancer causing element), in what might be considered “pristine” supplement products. Here is a list of other ingredients to avoid:
- “natural flavors”
- artificial sugars
- artificial flavors
- artificial flavors
- maltodextrin
- citric acid
- yeast extract
- hydrolyzed anything
And there are so many more. I will tell you now — these ingredients do nothing to bring healing to your body. They are dangerous flavor enhancers designed to make the products taste appealing. Don’t be fooled.
If you are looking for the “perfect supplement” — it may not exist. But I have found some really good ones recently.
The perfect supplement has these qualities:
- It contains none of the harmful ingredients listed above
- It is made from organic whole-food sources
There are a handful of companies that produce excellent supplements. I recently stumbled across one such company called Perfect Supplements. And I have my mother-in-law to thank. She had me order some Green Pasture Blue Ice Royal Butter Oil/Fermented Cod Liver Oil Blend from this company around 2009.
I received a recent email from them and was impressed that they were offering a grass fed beef gelatin. After checking out their other products, I knew it was a company I could stand behind. Ironically, it was at the same time that I was writing about whole-food supplements.
I cannot, however, endorse all their products carte blanch. Each product must be examined individually to see if all the ingredients are safe. Over the next few months I will highlight some of their products that I can fully support.
