Several years back, we were meeting with the pastor and his wife sharing about health in the Bible. One Sunday, my pastor asked me a question to test my health knowledge. “What is the best salt?” he asked. I quickly replied, “Real Salt” (he didn’t know I meant Redmond Real Salt). He responded back, “No. It’s sea salt.”
Of course, I couldn’t argue. I know that sea salt is the best salt. And I wasn’t actually sure at the time if my salt was harvested from the sea. What I did know is that it was filled with lots of naturally occurring minerals (unlike table salt).

When I got home, I looked at my package of Real Salt with a sigh of relief. Yes. It was sea salt that was mined from ancient sea beds.
My pastor, however, probably thought that when I said “Real Salt” that I was talking about regular table salt — which in the minds of many people is real salt — except that it is not.
Why Is Table Salt Fake?
You might be wondering why table salt is not really salt. The truth is that it has very little to do with the name.
The table salt you buy at most grocery stores (and many sea salts too) have been highly processed and stripped of their naturally occurring minerals like magnesium, calcium, iodine, and other trace minerals that are essential for vibrant health.
When you ingest regular table salt, it is actually akin to eating junk food — and not good for you. The high sodium content is not what God intended for the life-giving force of salt — which was once used to pay Roman soldiers their wages — a testimony to the value of salt. Learn about the health benefits of high-mineral salts here.
So when I say that table salt is not real salt, I mean it has been refined to a dangerous level and should not be consumed.
What Is Real Salt?
Any salt that has not been refined could be called real salt. However, Redmond Real Salt is a brand name of a sea salt that is mined from an ancient protected seabed in Utah. It’s Americas only pink and black salt with all the naturally occurring minerals that God designed.
A side-by-side comparison with Morton table salt would show that regular Morton Table Salt has 590 mg of sodium in 1/4 tsp (1.5 grams), whereas Redmond Real Salt has 530 mg of sodium per 1/4 tsp (1.4 grams). Gram for gram, Morton has 393 mg of sodium per gram and Celtic Sea Salt has 379 mg per gram.
What makes up the difference?
It is the minerals and trace minerals that occur naturally in the salt. Plus, there are no additives or anti-caking agents like you might find added to table salt and processed sea salts.
These minerals do more than enhance the nutritional value of the salt; they also enhance the flavor, giving it a sweetness not found in processed salts. If you compare the two, you will notice straight table salt might even burn your tongue. Whereas, Redmond Real Salt is very pleasing on the palate.
What Minerals Are in Redmond Real Salt?
One analysis of Redmond Real Salt found 59 minerals and trace minerals present in detectable amounts. The higher concentrations (not counting the sodium chloride) included:
- Calcium
- Sulfur
- Silicon
- Potassium
- Magnesium
- Iron
It also contains trace elements of vital nutrients like:
- Zinc
- Silver
- Selenium
- Molybdenum
- Manganese
And more.
How Many Kinds of Redmond Real Salt Are There?
Redmond Real Salt is a family owned brand that takes pride in the fact that their salt is mined in the US. Plus, it technically falls under the “organic” label.
Here are a few types of Real Salt available on the market:

Where Can You Buy Redmond Real Salt?
Real Salt is available at most health food stores and even conventional supermarkets. If you can’t find the type of salt you are looking for at your local store, Amazon carries many of the varieties.
My favorite is the fine grain refill packs put into a shaker. It is perfect for sprinkling my food and for cooking. Plus, the bulk package helps the budget.
