What Special Foods Did Jesus Actually Eat?

41 Ways toGet ExerciseNaturallyandavoidthe Gym.jpg

A lot of speculation is made about what Jesus would have eaten or what He did eat. By providence, there are many things that we do not need to speculate on, for the Bible tells us. Of course, we will never know all that Christ ate, and some speculations may indeed be true. But for fun, here is a list of foods that we know He ate (or was attempting to eat) according to the Scriptures. Included are the foods recorded in the New Testament in Christ’s incarnation as well as the foods eaten in His Old Testament theophanies. Learn more about theophanies here.

New Testament Foods

  • Fish (Luke 24:42-43)
  • Well Water (John 4:7)
  • Wine (Mark 14:23; Matthew 11:19; Luke 7:34)
  • Figs (Mark 11:12-13; Matthew 21:18-19)
  • Unleavened Bread (at the Feast of Unleavened Bread)
  • Lamb (at the Feast of the Passover) [1]
  • Vinegar mixed with gall (just a taste, but he would not drink it – Matthew 27:34)

Old Testament Foods

  • Bread (Genesis 18:1-8)
  • Beef (Genesis 18:1-8)
  • Curds (Genesis 18:1-8)
  • Milk (Genesis 18:1-8)

Things Jesus Certainly Did Not Eat [2]

  • Fish without fins and scales, including lobster, shrimp, clams, oysters, etc. (Leviticus 11:9-12)
  • Pork, rabbit, weasel, rat and other inedible meats (Leviticus 11:4-8)
  • Vultures, owls, hawks and other inedible poultry (Leviticus 11:13-19)
  • Flying insects that walked on four feet, the hoppers excepted (Leviticus 11:20-23)

[1] Because Jesus had to fulfill the whole law, He would have had to participate in these feasts.

[2] Because Jesus had to fulfill the whole law, He could not have eaten these foods which God had declared both unclean and inedible in the Old Testament.
