The Natural Solution to Toxic Skin Care Products

We often think about the health value of our food (or the lack of), but we can easily overlook other things that come in contact with our bodies. My blog, Simple Life Mom, focuses primarily on natural living, health and DIY Bath and Body products.

Why Care About Ingredients?

You may have heard that your skin is the largest organ in your body. Well, it’s true! Your skin absorbs all of the chemicals that you throw at it.

According to the Environmental Working Group, the average American woman uses up to 12 products containing up to 168 unique ingredients every day!(1) 168 ingredients! The typical lotion, shampoo, or makeup may contain preservatives like DISODIUM EDTA and BHT, or coloring and texture enhancers like TITANIUM DIOXIDE or YELLOW NO. 10.

You may say, “Wait a second! Doesn’t the FDA approve these ingredients and isn’t an ingredient like Titanium dioxide found in my natural mineral makeup?”

  1. The FDA does not approve or disapprove ingredients for skin products. Only those items considered medical are monitored (bug spray, acne medication, pads – yes, even homemade cotton pads).
  2. FDA approves thousands of other ingredients that are later shown (or shown in many studies at the time of approval) to be cancerous. The list of ingredients that have been taken off of the market is very very slim.
    • Most ingredients in bug sprays and sunscreens are considered cancerous according to many studies….people continue to spray them on.
    • Titanium dioxide has been shown to absorb into the skin and is considered cancerous by many natural health groups….yet it is still used in “natural” makeup and sunscreens.
  3. Calling something “natural” doesn’t mean ANYTHING these days. There is no regulation against using that word (Just like chickens crammed in disgustingly gross conditions in buildings are called “cage free”).

Since you cannot trust labeling of products, what can you do?

  1. Arm Yourself with Knowledge. Look for actual research. I could make claims that I read somewhere, that they read somewhere, that they read somewhere….and could be perpetuating ignorance. University and independent studies that are backed by other studies and peer reviewed are more respected and more reliable.
  2. Learn about Ingredients. Take time to learn the language and cut down on ingredients.
  3. Make your own products as often as possible. You know what’s in it if you make it yourself.

This is why I make my own products. I provide the recipes for those who want to make it themselves, and I sell the items I make for those who would rather buy, or at least try it out before buying multiple ingredients to make it themselves.
