Metaphor_ Breath-5Man does not create metaphors — he merely discovers them. And there may be millions of metaphors yet undiscovered in this vast universe in which we live. Many of the greatest metaphors, however, have been revealed through special revelation. I will share twelve. Be sure to click each link to learn more about the reality and the representation. One of the Great Metaphors: The Blood of Life

Blood should have been the first item in this list of metaphors, for a person cannot live one minute without blood. It is the foundational building block for life. The Scripture agrees. Leviticus 17:11 says, “The life of the flesh is in the blood.” But once again we find that blood represents something greater than physical life.

One of the Great Metaphors: The Rest of Life

Metaphor_ Breath-3

This is the tenth in a series of the 12 greatest metaphors for life.

  1. The breath of life: a person can live three minutes without air.
  2. The shelter of life: in harsh climes a person can live 3 hours without shelter.
  3. The water of life:  a normal person can live three days without water.
  4. The bread of life: the average person can live about three weeks without food.
  5. The light of life: if the sun were to stop giving its light, global temperatures would drop, plants would die, trees would vanish, and all life would cease to exist.
  6. The tree of life:  trees provide life-giving nourishment, beauty, and shade.
  7. The true vine of life: grapes nourish the body and wine brings joy to the heart.
  8. The oil of life: the olive tree was once a primary source of oil for food and light.
  9. The spice of life: spice provides flavor for bland food, healing for sick bodies, and fragrance for perfumes.
  10. The rest of life: after three days of no sleep, the average person begins to hallucinate. Sleep is such a fundamental part of life that we just cannot live without it. We need downtime to regenerate, recuperate, and revitalize the human flesh God has given us. Even Jesus, very God, had to rest when He walked among us.

The Rest of Life.

When a baby is born, it needs 16-18 hours of sleep to grow and develop. As the child ages, the amount of sleep it needs diminishes, but the need for sleep never goes away completely.

Human beings must have regular intervals of rest. This is by God’s design. We are not eternal, nor self-rejuvenating. We are not the Energizer Bunny: we don’t keep going and going (without rest). Adults need around eight hours of sleep each night to thrive. In addition, we need one day of rest in seven. This is what God has designed from the beginning. It is a gift from God that refreshes and restores the body. Without this rest, we will not Continue reading “One of the Great Metaphors: The Rest of Life”

One of the Great Metaphors: the Spice of Life

Spices by nature add a special quality to whatever mundane thing they touch or mingle with. Can you imagine an apple streusel pie or pumpkin bread without cinnamon? Or chocolate chip cookies without a dash of vanilla. Or a mojito without a sprig of mint. Spice takes something that is already good and improves it, makes it better.

One of the Great Metaphors: The Oil of Life

In recent years, oil has received a bad reputation as unhealthy. Fat free diets were once a fad that I bought into. This wrong thinking caused me great physical harm as oil is necessary for the brain function and healthy hormone levels. In light of the great metaphor of the olive tree — we should see that oil (fat) is a necessary part of our diet.

One of the Great Metaphors: The True Vine of Life

The metaphor of the True Vine should cause us to evaluate the use of wine in our own lives and churches. Do we wrongfully hold others to a standard higher than our Lord? Have we thrown out this picture of joy due to a legitimate abuse? Drunkenness to be sure is a sin. But wine is a picture of joy.

One of The Great Metaphors: The Tree of Life

But God had planted a special tree in the garden of Eden: the tree of life. This tree was different than all the other trees because it was said to be the wellspring of eternal life.

After man fell, God sent angels to guard the garden so man could not eat from this tree and live eternally in their state of sin.

But God had another plan to bring everlasting life to the first couple and their future progeny (even those who believe today).
