One of Greatest Metaphors for Life: #2 Shelter

Metaphor_ Breath-2I recently promised a series of 10 of the greatest metaphors for life — but I remembered at least two more. So I am up to 12. Today’s metaphor for life is shelter. In harsh climes, a person can live only three hours without shelter. It is one of the necessities of life. But it is so much better than that.

#2: The shelter of life.

God provided the perfect environment for Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden — not a typical American garden, rather a king’s garden — a landscaped beauty filled with all kinds of treasures for the eyes and lips. [3] From the beginning of time, God knew man’s need for shelter, and He provided in the most marvelous of ways.

Once Adam sinned, God booted him out of the Garden shelter without any clothes on his back. However, God knowing Adam’s need, clothed him and his naked wife Eve with animals skins. This first sacrifice recorded in Scripture was a means of providing the shelter of clothing for the first man and woman.

But a majestic garden and animal skin clothing was only a small picture of a bigger reality. Psalm 91:1 tells us that God Himself is a shelter — and, in His shelter, He keeps man safe from all dangers and harm (Psalm 31:20). And Revelation 7:15 tells us that He who sits on the throne will shelter many people with His presence.

Jesus ultimately fulfills this metaphor for life — for He is our shelter. And even further, He clothes us with His righteousness (Isaiah 61:10; Romans 13:14), just as He clothed Adam and Eve in the Garden to cover their shame.

Let us go to the true Tabernacle for shelter in this life and the life to come. God, our shelter, knows how to provide good things for His children.

He knows. He cares. And He heals — His way.
