Introduction: Why Am I Sick? 7 Biblical Reasons

Why Am I Sick?

Why me? Why am I sick? Why?

We have all heard this question asked, or even asked it at some point in our life.

The Bible says in Psalms 84:11, “For the Lord God is a sun and a shield; The Lord gives grace and glory; No good thing does He withhold from those who walk uprightly.”

If God withholds “no good thing” from those who walk uprightly, then it is understandable to ask, “Why do I have this sickness or chronic condition?”

To gain an understanding as to why we get sick, why we contract a disease, or why our bodies do not function properly, we need to seek the whole counsel of God to find the answer. It is to Him that we should first go for the answers of why we are ill.

If you are not absolutely convinced that God should be the first one to seek concerning answers to your illness, please read the series titled, “Where to Go for Authoritative Answers About Health” Clicking the previous link will take you to the introduction of the articles.

The next several posts will present seven biblical reasons why people suffer from various illnesses. These illnesses can affect Christians and/or non-Christians depending on the context of the situation.

Keep in mind that these articles are simply sharing from God’s Word the reasons that people suffer sickness and disease. We are not dealing with diagnosis, in fact, we cannot diagnose or evaluate the cause of your particular illness.

Each individual alone must prayerfully consider what biblical reasons apply to their given health situation. Most people will likely find that the main cause of their illness falls into the seventh reason (natural physical laws). But we must first carefully examine the first six reasons, either eliminating them as the source, or dealing with them as necessary. We may also find the possibility that more than one reason will apply to any given situation.

The good news is that most of these situations can be remedied or improved by applying the Biblical Principles of Wellness. Reformed Health is devoted to showing you HOW. But first we must lay the foundation for the WHY.

This series of article has many of the answers. The next post will present reason #1 that people get sick and suffer. Perhaps you will discover the reason that you are ill and suffering, or find a way to prevent it from happening to you.

One last thought to consider. The overarching cause of all illness is the fall of man in the Garden of Eden. Had Adam been a perfect representative in the Garden, we would have no illness in the world today. And with Christ as our perfect representative, we have the hope of a future world without sin and death and illness. Please note that this is an underlying foundation that is accepted, but not specifically covered within the seven reasons.
