A Ruptured Appendix Was the Seed Bed For Reformed Health

story-2The Early Years.

At the age of three, Tom nearly died from a ruptured appendix. Around the same time, Tom’s grandmother died of breast cancer. These two events startled Tom’s mother Violet into making some serious changes in the diet and health of the family. She was convinced that Tom’s illness was a result of the fried foods and poor diet she had been feeding the family. When her mother died from cancer, Violet became convinced that if she continued to eat the same foods as her mother, she too would develop breast cancer and die early.

Tom’s mother, who had migrated from Russia at the age of three,  began making changes. She developed a nutritional approach to health, relying heavily on vitamins and supplements. Thus Tom was introduced to health and nutrition at an early age.

The Awkward Years (Teens).

In his teens, Tom developed an embarrassing case of acne. To combat the red marks on his face, Tom’s mother took him to a nutritionist, who told him eliminate soda and other harmful foods from his diet. She also suggested he regularly drink a nutrition concoction that she developed specifically for him. Desperate, Tom followed her advice to the letter. Within the three months of summer, Tom’s face and neck had cleared up. This event made a  major impression in Tom’s mind about the benefits of nutrition, but it wasn’t a debilitating illness later in his life that he developed the biblical principles of nutrition shared on Reformed Health.

The Crisis.

After the acne incident, Tom went about life as usual. He graduated college, took a job, worked long hours either at the job or at home, served in the church, had a family, ate the basic American diet, took his vitamins, exercised occasionally, and lived a basically normal life — until unexpectedly his energy levels began to drop dramatically. In addition, despite his tiredness, he was having difficulty sleeping at night. He would just lie there in bed in frustration. For Tom, things progressed from bad to worse.

He was a wreck. He would come home from work and immediately crash on the couch, too tired to move or sleep. He would lay awake for hours during the night, just to barely get up again and start a new lethargic day. All the vitamins and minerals he took did not help. This went on for months.

The Solution.

Tom knew that he could not continue to live as he was. He went to the doctor, but they could not find anything wrong. He had nothing to give and it was affecting his family, not to mention his own sanity.

One day, as he lay there on the couch, the thought entered his mind that the Bible must have the answers to his sickness. The doctors didn’t know what was wrong, but surely God must know. After all, God was all-knowing and the Bible did claim to have all the answers pertaining to life and godliness. And Tom’s health was part of his life.

Thus began his journey into God’s Word to find the answers to his health. As he found answers and thought through the implications of living under God’s design, Tom began to apply the principles to his life. As he applied the principles, he began seeing slow and progressive improvements in his energy levels and his sleeping habits. With much perseverance he completely recovered.

Determined to never suffer from such a debilitating illness again, Tom continued practicing the principles he had come to believe in and trust from God’s Word.

Sometime during his recovery, the doctors finally gave him a diagnosis: he had contracted the Epstein Barr Virus — but tests revealed that it was in remission.

Oops, Something’s Wrong.

Some time later Tom broke out with a skin eruption on his legs. Confused, Tom went to the dermatologist. They did tests and took skin samples. But yet again, they could give no diagnosis other than acknowledge that it was some type of skin condition. In regular form, the doctor prescribed several different medications. Yet, nothing the doctor prescribed helped Tom’s condition.

Still convinced that God had the answer, Tom began to examine closer what might be the cause. He found the answer in his diet.

Although Tom had been applying the principles of God’s Word to his life, he began to realize that the food in the supermarkets, even in the health food stores, was not as fresh as it should be. He isolated certain foods that he had been eating, recognizing that they were rancid. Although it was supposedly healthy food, it was not as healthy as it should have been. He learned that nuts out of the shell, grain that was not freshly milled, and raw vegetables that were beginning to wilt were harming him physically. He cut these out of his diet, replacing them with fresh, life giving food. And the result was that his oozing, boiling, itchy, red rash slowly disappeared.

When Tom returned to the dermatologist, he was instructed by the doctor to continue doing what he was doing. It was working. Of course he didn’t really need a doctor to tell him that.

Even today, over 20 years later, if Tom ingests these rancid foods, his rash will begin to reemerge. In a way Tom is blessed to be so sensitive to rancid food in a visible way. How many people suffer skin conditions and don’t know why? How many people are affected by rancid food but don’t see the outward signs? Everything ingested into the body either helps or harms. Think about that the next time you eat your dinner.

Helping Others.

Through the years, Tom has tried to help others with their various health issues. At the request of a friend, Pastor Paul Reeves, Tom put together a study on “Living under God’s Design,” teaching health from the Scriptures. This website, Reformed Health, is the fruit of these labors. It is Tom’s study notes that have provided the foundation for the information in this website. Please take the time to glean the vast array of information available here.
