Progress Report: Sometimes You Just Need A Good Steak

A Good Steak

Success!

I am pleased to announce that the lump in my breast has nearly vanished. There is only a small trace remaining. It took some serious searching into my diet and life-style to resolve the issue (and a lot of prayer). And in the end, it turned out that I just needed a good steak. Well, it is a bit more complicated than that. Let me catch you up to speed.

How it All Started.

We recently moved into an apartment with high levels of EMFs. Safe levels are considered to be under 3 milligauss, zero being the optimal level. Our apartment was reading up to 10-25 milligauss in our sleeping area and 4-10 in our living area. Of course, I didn’t realize this when we first moved in.

But it wasn’t long before I was suffering from a terrible case of insomnia, with a feeling in my brain that I can only explain as “crazy brain.” I would wake up in the middle of the night feeling super stressed out, with pressure in my brain that just made me feel nervous and crazy. The next thing that happened was my pinky finger broke out in a major case of cellulitis. Thankfully it didn’t spread past my finger and I was able to manage it with oils, soakings, and bandaids. But it would not clear up completely. It would begin to clear up, then ooze open again. But the event that finally sparked my diligent searching into the matter was discovering a lump in my breast the size of a silly putty egg.

The Culprit.

Finding the lump prompted me to consider the 21 electric meters outside my bedroom window. (Why didn’t I notice them when I moved in?)

Just to be safe, I began sleeping in the living room, and I noticed the crazy head syndrome seemed to be less harsh there. I sought out a gauss meter to measure the readings in my home. Unbeknownst to me, I owned a Trifield Gauss Meter Model 100XE that a friend had given me several months earlier. Thankfully, I stumbled across it prior to buying a new one.

My meter revealed that the EMFs in my home were at dangerous levels. Government studies show that high EMFs can compromise the immune system, affect sleep, disrupt hormones, and cause or exacerbate breast lumps and cancer (among other things). I knew I could not stay in that environment. My health was too important. So we transferred to a new apartment where the EMF readings  were in the safe zone of under 3 milligauss.

If you are suffering unexplained symptoms, or suspect the EMFs in your living or working environment are at unsafe levels, I highly recommend testing with a TriField Gauss Meter Model 100XE. The meter is highly rated on Amazon and top of the line. In addition, everything you need to know for use and operation is right on the meter. This makes it super easy to use — even a child could understand it. It also measures radio and microwaves.  Check out yours now.

Still Suffering.

After moving to our new apartment, I was sure that my troubles were over. I expected now that we were in a safe zone, my finger would heal, my lump would disappear, and my sleep would return to normal. But I was wrong. In fact, the lump in my breast got larger. This discouraged me greatly, and I cried out to God for answers.

After some research, I discovered that the body needs to reset after being exposed to high EMFs. A friend with electrical experience recommended wearing a copper bracelet. An Internet source suggested I use the earth’s electromagnetic field to get my body into the proper electrical rhythm. So with my new copper bracelet and a day at the beach with bare feet, I felt I had a good chance of resetting.

But there was more.

For about 10 months I had been on calorie reduction weight loss diet. Though I was eating organic foods, raw salads, and plenty of healthy foods,  my body was not getting the nutrition it needed to combat the high EMFs. I began a serious evaluation of my diet and found that even with supplements, I was not getting all the nutrition that my body needed to stay healthy. So I made a bold move. I quit all my supplements and committed to getting my recommended daily vitamins and minerals from food alone. Read more about that here: How to Starve to Death on a Full Stomach.

Nutrients from Food.

My husband convinced me that food is God’s provision for a healthy body, not supplements. He has not taken supplements for many years and gets his nutrition solely from food. I thought I would give it a try.

Getting all the nutrients my body needed from food alone, without supplementation, was not easy. It was like a full time job at first. But I was determined.  Unfortunately, I was finding it difficult to get the iron my body needed while staying within a healthy caloric intake. This difficulty came about primarily because I had years earlier made a decision to reduce (practically eliminate) the amount of red meat in my diet.

Spinach In, Spinach Out.

I found that spinach was the best source of iron — but I needed to eat a lot of it. I was eating so much spinach, that it was going in green and going out green. Even worse, I lost my enjoyment of eating because there is just not a whole lot you can do with spinach — simply because it is spinach. My husband kept nudging me to eat more red meat, but I refused.

Spinach is an iron powerhouse, especially when considering caloric intake — and I felt I could suffer it out. After all, it was for my health.

I was making a fatal error and I did not know it.

Spinach is not only high in iron, but also in vitamin A. And as I was tracking my nutrient levels, I noticed I was eating up to 5000% of my daily need of vitamin A on a regular basis. This didn’t alarm me until my body began experiencing some unpleasant symptoms which could be explained by vitamin A toxicity. It is very difficult to reach unsafe levels of vitamin A from food alone. But with the high amounts I was consuming, vitamin A toxicity could not be ruled out — and my symptoms were the same as those that can occur from short term exposure to too much vitamin A. These symptoms included

  • Cranial pressure
  • Joint pain
  • Muscle pain
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue

Interestingly, some of the symptoms were similar to iron deficiency, but I was getting plenty of iron. Yet, I felt “iron deficient.” But a case of excess vitamin A made more sense based on what I was eating.  Once I made the connection, I immediately cut back my spinach to help get my vitamin A intake to normal levels. As a result, the symptoms vanished.

But now I was back to finding ways to get my iron from my food. After much deliberation, I finally agreed to regularly incorporate red meat into my diet. And quite admittedly, a good steak tasted a whole lot better than a bowl of spinach.

Recovery at Last.

And once I found the correct balance of nutrition from food, my breast lump started shrinking slowly. My sleep became more regular. My finger began to heal. And as an added benefit, my digestion improved. But I have to keep practicing all that we teach here on Reformed Health to maintain my wellness. Diet is only ONE factor among many. But it is an important factor; and I am so thankful to have learned why I need to eat red meat: it is one of God’s provision. Meat (not vegetarianism) Is a Gift from God to Be Enjoyed.

In future posts, we will be sharing the wonderful benefits found in the meat that God has given for mankind as food.

The Importance of Balance.

I an important lesson from this ordeal. A balanced diet of meat, dairy, grains, fruit, and vegetables is the best way to get the nutrients the body needs. This is God’s design. He doesn’t want us to overload on any one kind of superfood. We must eat the foods that He has created to be enjoyed. I was wrong to limit my intake of meat (and increase my intake of spinach) to unsafe levels. God has given meat to mankind as food — and I should have received it with thanksgiving. Read more about that here: Meat (not vegetarianism) Is a Gift from God to Be Enjoyed.

Some so called “biblical” diets advocate the abstaining from meat altogether. But this is not what the Bible teaches. After the flood, God gave his blessing on the eating of meat, later mandating it in the sacrificial system of the Old Covenant, especially in The Passover.

God has given meat to us because it is necessary for health in the world we live. In fact, Jesus Himself ate lamb while on earth, as it was part of the Passover celebration. We know too that He ate fish in His earthly minsitry and beef when He met Abraham at the Oaks of Mamre. Thanks for keeping up with my progress.
